The action takes place in the home of the Westerbys, an upper-middle-class family in 1970s England. The usual intergenerational family stresses are exacerbated by the organising and preparation of their daughter’s society wedding. Timothy Westerby, the father of the bride and a harried advertising executive, is under pressure to produce an original marketing campaign for a bra company. He has what he considers a brilliant marketing idea: a 1920s “Flapper Girl”. He has just introduced the cardboard cut-out model of the “Flapper Girl” to his family, when the stress and his pill-taking habits lead to life taking off in a whole new direction.
Ursula Westerby – 40s Mother of the bride
Judy Westerby – 20s The bride
Timothy Westerby – 40s Father of the bride
Dr. Gerald Drimmond – Late 60s Timothy’s father-in-law
Bill Shorter – Late 40s Timothy’s friend
Daphne Drimmond – Late 60s Timothy’s mother-in-law
Polly Perkins – 20s Polly Perkins (a cardboard cutout)
Charles Babcock – 50s Father of the groom (requires Australian accent)
This is a play about an English upper-middle-class family. While being able to present an English accent is great, not being able to do so should not prevent you from coming to the audition. What will be more important is learning how to present the upper-middle-class English (Home Counties) attitudes. This we will be covering in rehearsals.
The audition will consist of reading passages from the script with other actors.
